Except that having a trade deficit isn't necessarily a bad thing.  Not to mention that we actually have a trade surplus with Canada.

The amount of money Trump is saying the U.S. “lost” is the trade deficit – the amount by which the goods and services Americans bought internationally exceeds the amount they sold to other countries. But the number he’s citing is itself is fundamentally inaccurate. Trump has previously cited an $800 billion trade deficit more than 50 times, according to the New York Times. But whether $800 billion or $817 billion, Trump’s number only includes trade in goods, excluding services. That distortion seems to represent a belief within the administration that manufacturing and farming are inherently better economic activities than providing services. This ethos would seem to align with the concerns of Trump’s domestic political base. But it doesn’t match the reality of America’s position as a global leader in high-value services including finance, engineering, education, and telecommunications. In fact, the U.S. has a global surplus in service exports – Americans sell more to other countries than they buy from them. Once they’re added back to the tally, the overall U.S. trade deficit drops to $566 billion – 30% lower than Trump’s number. In some specific countries, such as Canada, Trump can only claim there’s a bilateral trade deficit at all because his numbers exclude services. In reality, the U.S. has a trade surplus with Canada.

What country does the US have the largest trade deficit with?

  1. China – $375.2 billion
  2. Mexico – $71.1 billion
  3. Japan – $68.8 billion
  4. Germany – $64.3 billion
  5. Vietnam – $38.3 billion
  6. Ireland – $38.1 billion
  7. Italy – $31.6 billion
  8. Malaysia – $24.6 billion
  9. India – $22.9 billion
  10. South Korea – $22.9 billion

Tell your intellectual ivory tower bullshit to workers in the U.S. who have seen the factories where they use to work shut down because of unfair trade policies. They had high paying manufacturing jobs and now they work in low paying service jobs.

No they think it is a waste of time talking to an idiot and they will deal with the US in either 2.5 years time or ... 6.5 years time. The US have usually held the whip hand over trade deals but they don't since the EU expanded and China came to prominence. Trust me absolutely nobody ever took the US for suckers. The problem with Trump is his word already means nothing. He is still that school bully who will take your dinner money off you and come back the next day and do it again and if you fight back he'll just call his daddy. People then stop bringing their dinner money or move school. The result of this is that Europe may hate the US the way they hate the UK at the moment but for the moment they just regard Trump as an aberration.

Part of this is Europe's fault but a lot of it is just history. There are 3 factors, 2 to do with Germany.

1. Europe does not defend itself properly because Germany for reason the whole world knows does not have the military that it could easily afford and therefore relies on the US to defend against Russia. This is wrong and Germany and Japan in the East need to arm themselves once again. If Japan was dealing with North Korea we might never have got into the recent mess. I agree the US should not be spending its money defending Europe.

2. Germany are so paranoid about itself it has a psychological need to keep Europe and itself under control. This means that Europe is not as strong as it might be being distracted by the problems of weaker and more unstable countries. There are a lot of voices at the table and while US has state interests, country interests are a lot more powerful and fragile.

3. Europe lacks natural resources (apart from Norway who aren't in the EU) which puts the continent in  a vulnerable position when negotiating with anyone: Russia, The Middle East and North America, and this means most of the time it is simply not trade in manufactured goods and services. This makes most of Europe although not the UK vulnerable to Russia. This vulnerability to Russia leads back to point 1 and gives the US a massive advantage for any trading deal. Therefore I really can't believe considering its advantages, any previous deal was unfavourable to the US.

Now we have Trump and Europe and Japan should wake up to the fact this scenario could always have happened. Basically the US have abandoned diplomacy have no interest in being allies and are sinking back into the narrow minded protectionism and isolationism of a century ago. Therefore we should prepare for a world in which we treat the US the same as China. Because of what I have described above that may take some time and maybe the Trump problem will have sorted itself but at the moment we (and I do that knowing the idiotic decision the UK took) need to make plans without America because there is no point in dealing with  a man who rips up agreements on a whim.

Myself, I would very much like to find and read the specific documents regarding the tariffs on US imported goods. I do understand some of these are extremely high -- that's called protectionism -- but I'd like to see more actual documents and less hysteria about the entire situation. Trade agreements should be viewed and understood by logical, and not by emotional, analysis. Politicians seldom are willing or capable to do this. Their people require emotionalism and rhetoric, so they are not trained to do much good for anybody.

There isn't going to be a trade war unless it's between the democracies and republics of the world versus the totalitarian states. That one could happen. And often, I think it probably should. Why so much of my tax dollars have been plundered by my own government to support the world's largest concentration camps in the world like North Korea is unfathomable and immoral.

Now that is *******s. What are you measuring that on? Most of Europe has a far better work/life balance. US citizens enjoy themselves more than the Italians? Come on now, have some grounding in reality.

Wait a minute, sir. There's really no need to drag the Italians into this. They like to drink wine. Any culture that loves wine and can drink wine is highly civilized, despite continual warfare, government corruption and continual economic collapse. They definitely know how to enjoy a great meal with friends and family. And some of them, as on RLC, know how to enjoy a great many other pleasures of life! 😁

I started a business in my garage with little government interference, and wound up with a business in the city within 6 months, and ran it for 25 years before taking an early retirement. That's why I have time to come here and chat with you fine folks. If you haven't noticed, StnCld & I are in total disagreement regarding many aspects of politics (including Trump), but yet we are both very good friends. That's how politics should be done.

Russia has Leora living there, in Siberia of all places. That should pretty much knock other nation's pride down a few notches.

So according to you the EU has the right to impose tariffs on U.S. exports, but now screams bloody murder when Trump threatens to reciprocate with tariffs on EU exports. Maybe the U.S. should also withdraw from NATO,so the EU can defend itself with its low quality military.😂

The combined military forces of the EU has nothing to worry about - would much rather there was no US influence, that will cut out our boys getting shot up by your unprofessional meatheads in blue on blue incidents, which happens far too often to be coincidence instead of poor training.  Your military is big but it is shit.  How many wars have you won in the past 40 years?  Fuck's sake, Iraq and Afghanistan, you lot are up against peasants armed with only AK47s and plastic explosive and you can't finish those off!

You are so wrong it is pitiful, I will say this so everyone can read your bullshit, and know that you are leftist which only spews his own views that are not based on fact's,  but just your opinion.

The US will crack 20 plus trillion this year in GDP and has had a consistent growth in GDP since the 2010 Obama fuck up, the very best year for the EU was 2008 when they hit a world high at that time of 19.1 trillion, but since then the EU started to fall apart, and the GDP has been dropping year over year to 16 trillion estimate for 2018. The only other major player in the worlds GDP that has been falling year over year is Russia.

Just think how much the EU would import without the massive huge tariffs placed on the US goods ?

So much for a global economy and then lets talk protectionism ?

BUY AMERICAN  MADE IN THE USA

20 plus trillion GDP but a national debt of 21 trillion - yeah go USA!!! The only thing that seems to be of any value to you is the lies that you tell yourselves to pretend that you're still a decent country!! 😂

You do realize that trump is about to beat Obama's debt record? Somewhere the money for the gifts to the rich must come from.  Trump is wasting the future of young people in the US.

A little more social fairness would be good for the average citizen. But in your trump eagerness, you'll never see it.

If the USA is such a terrible place why do all those people keep trying to cross our southern border to get in?

Who we going to get that from, the Marxist clown Bernie Sanders or maybe from the dumbest Speaker of the House in the history of Congress,Nancy Pelosi? "Social Fairness" is just another term for Marxism."From each according to their ability. To each according to their needs."   Social fairness and social justice are just bullshit terms used by the left to justify the injustice of wealth redistribution by an authoritarian government. Check out how well that social justice bullshit has worked out in the Democrat run socialist state of California.
