Folding@home now has access to over 470 petaFLOPS
of distributed compute power to research Covid-19

To put that into perspective, a 1 teraFLOPS (TFLOPS) computer can perform
1 trillion floating-point operations per second (FLOPS). To match what a 1
TFLOPS computer system can do in just one second, you'd have to perform
one calculation every second for 31,688.77 years.

One petaFLOPS is 1000 teraFLOPS, or 1 quadrillion floating-point operations
per second. So, 470 petaFLOPS is 470,000 teraFLOPS.

To go one step further, an exaFLOPS equals 1000 petaFLOPS, or one
quintillion FLOPS. For example,

  • 1 exasecond is approximately 32 billion years
  • 1 exametre is approximately 110 light-years (a light year = 5,879,000,000,000
    miles (9,461,333,376,000 km))

That's good news I guess. I am happy we have people doing research in labs like crazy these days 👍

They'll get their Lab full of Human Guinea Pigs soon.   guinea pig GIF
