I think Alberto had one play and he failed to execute it. All he had to do was get his act together (find a job, less video games etc) AND tell Martina that she can be with women and even other men but we MUST do it together. I think you are basically correct Pete, the vast majority of FWB relationships are as you describe. But what explains their behavior? One thought I proposed a year or two ago, that is still a valid speculation today, is that they were good friends who loved the casual sex and then saw an ad in the paper for RLC and said “why not”? The people who deny a casual or FWB sexual relationship can’t explain the one-sidedness of their relationship … Martina’s complete openness about her sexual exploits. Yet … we must not lose sight of the fact that whatever this relationship was when it started … two things have happened: These two have drifted apart and more importantly … Alberto had more feelings for Martina than she did for him.

I know I push the FWB hypothesis quite hard here however I will admit this could be another explanation. But think about what you are saying … for her to “tell all” like this, these two must have had some sort of up front agreement about not being exclusive. In this scenario, one of the partners feels the need to over-share to relieve guilt. But you would never over-share if you felt your partner did not agree that your relationship was not exclusive. I don’t think FWB is as formal as you make this sound. Actually, I think most FWB’s have sex much less frequently than these two used to make love. Consider Masha’s black military man … it seems like they are on a 2x or 3x per year schedule. If Martina and Alberto end up hating each other … the sex will likely come to a full stop. Totally agree. My point is the rule is not easily enforceable so perhaps it shouldn’t be a rule. If it can’t be enforced uniformly, the mods come off as being arbitrary and capricious.
