Axios: Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told NBC News Monday international rules of war wouldn’t apply to two Americans that Russian forces captured in Ukraine and he wouldn’t rule out death sentences for the vets. The U.S. State Department issued a statement to Axios and other outlets calling on the Kremlin “as well as its proxies” to “live up to their international obligations in their treatment of any individual, including those captured fighting in Ukraine.” Geneva Conventions protections include ensuring “prisoners of war must at all times be humanely treated” (Axios). NBC: “It depends on the investigation,” Dmitry Peskov told NBC News senior international correspondent Keir Simmons when he was asked whether Alexander Drueke and Andy Huynh would “face the same fate” as two British citizens and a Moroccan who were sentenced to death by Moscow-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine this month. The families of Drueke, 39, and Huynh, 27, reported them missing last week. Peskov said Drueke and Huynh were “involved in illegal activities” in Ukraine, firing on Russian troops. “Those guys on the battlefield were firing at our military guys. They were endangering their lives,” he said. “There will be a court, and there will be a court decision,” Peskov said. “They should be punished,” he added, calling Drueke and Huynh “soldiers of fortune” (NBC).

Dmitry Medvedev Questions If Ukraine Will Even Exist in Two Years
mail?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.daybreakinsid

New York Post: One of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest allies ominously suggested that Ukraine might not exist in two years’ time. Dmitry Medvedev, former president and prime minister of the Russian Federation, who currently serves as deputy head of the country’s Security Council, took to his Telegram channel Wednesday to muse about Ukraine’s attempts to secure gas imports from its Western allies. “I saw a report that Ukraine wants to receive from its overseas masters [liquified natural gas] as part of a land-lease plan with payment for delivery after 2 years,” Medvedev wrote. “Otherwise the country will freeze next winter. “But here’s a question. Who said that after two years Ukraine will even exist on the world map? “But it makes no difference to the Americans – they are so invested in their ‘anti-Russia’ project, that everything else is trivial to them” (New York Post). Yahoo: Suggesting a country should be wiped off the map is inherently genocidal. The UN defines genocide as “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group” (Yahoo

Ukraine Refuses to Surrender Donbas City of Sievierodonetsk
mail?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.daybreakinsid

Independent: Ukraine ignored a Russian ultimatum to surrender the eastern city of Sievierodonetsk today. Russia told Ukrainian forces sheltering in a chemical plant in the ruined Donbas city to stop “senseless resistance and lay down arms” from Wednesday morning, pressing its advantage in the battle for control of eastern Ukraine. Ukraine said more than 500 civilians, including 40 children, remained alongside soldiers inside the Azot chemical works as the Russian bombardment of the surrounding city continued. Officials made no reference to the Russian ultimatum in remarks to the press on Wednesday. Moscow had said it would let civilians evacuate the plant on Wednesday but Russian-backed separatists said Ukrainian shelling had scuppered the plan (Independent). New York Post: With those reports, the siege of Severodonetsk began to mirror the tragedies of Mariupol, where defenders and residents held out for weeks in the bowels of a steel plant. But unlike the siege of Mariupol, Ukrainian-controlled Severodonetsk is not yet completely cut off from the rest of Ukrainian territory, Struyk said — despite Russian forces destroying the three bridges connecting the city to Ukrainian-held Lysychansk (New York Post).

Russian Soldiers’ Morale Crisis
mail?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.daybreakinsid

Independent: Whole Russian units are still refusing orders and “armed stand-offs” are happening between soldiers and officers, according to the British defence ministry. Its assessment of the war in Ukraine said both sides were “committed to intense combat” in the eastern Donbas region and were likely experiencing “variable morale”. “Ukrainian forces have likely suffered desertions in recent weeks, however, Russian morale highly likely remains especially troubled,” the UK defence ministry said on Sunday morning. It said low Russian morale was likely driven by factors including perceived poor leadership, very heavy casualties and problems with pay (Independent). Washington Times: Russian forces have made marginal gains on the outskirts of Severodonetsk, a crucial city in Ukraine’s Luhansk oblast, but have largely stalled along other routes. Military analysts say Moscow is facing mounting troop losses and broken-down equipment that will complicate any efforts to renew offensive operations in the ongoing battle to secure the Donbas region. Both Russia and Ukraine have continued to conduct heavy artillery barrages on positions around the Severodonetsk pocket, and both sides are experiencing moral problems from the intense combat (Washington Time
