It's the Russian way of curing a sore throat... they slice onions and wrap them round their neck.... sometimes they use a cloth with vodka on it.  That's what my ex-Russian girlfriend told me some years back after I saw her rubbing vodka on her chest to cure a cold.... What a waste of vodka... unless you lick it off....
