I looked at a flight tracking site.  He could have flown from Bali to Istanbul, and with change of planes, from Istanbul to Barcelona all on Turkish airlines.  6,500 miles, more or less, between Bali and Istanbul.  Routing over former republics of the USSR.    1,400 miles, more or less, between Istanbul and Barcelona.
