They lick themselves clean, their barbed tongues act like a brush getting rid of dirt, loose fur, and minor debris, and their saliva contains a special protein that coats the fur; they even clean their genital and anal region which makes up part of their grooming daily routine, and as cats don't lick people like dogs do, there is no reason to come in contact with their tongues. Of Course, it doesn't mean that their fur is 100% bacteria free and super clean, but cats are very good at looking after themselves. Older cats who are more unhygienic, may need their owners to give them a brush over ever now and then, as they can't reach the places that kittens and youngers cats can. 1 1 Quote
