Of course while we all know about these things now, as they are more open about many things, it's not as if they never happened in the past. They were just more hidden and considered shameful and scandalous by society at large. Those who engaged in such things had no such qualms. You've only got to read books like Madam Bovary or Ulysses, anything by Henry Miller or Anais Nin, or others from over 100 years ago, never mind 80 years past. I wish I understood French better as I'm sure the comments were even more insightful than rendered in the translation.
