It's a reference to an old TV show called Kung Fu. It starred David Carradine. He grew up in a Shaolin Monastery and trained to be a Shaolin monk. He was taught by the master of the temple in the art of Kung Fu. At some point, the master started calling him Grasshopper as a way to indicate that he was not yet a full-fledged monk.
