The rise of christianity happened during the roman empires rule in the middle east, mostly among poor people who had little to live for and liked the idea of a paradise when their awfull life ends. When it comes to names, I guess we got some of the names from roman texts, and the writers would have changed the names to something romans would recognize. Also, many of the names comes from jewish names, where Matthew and such makes sense.
