Actually, he didn't exist at the time. The rise of christianity happened during the roman empires rule in the middle east, mostly among poor people who had little to live for and liked the idea of a paradise when their awfull life ends. The muslims at the time, who were not muslims at the time, where praying to some kind of sun god. They switched to Allah later. When it comes to names, I guess we got some of the names from roman texts, and the writers would have changed the names to something romans would recognize. Also, many of the names comes from jewish names, where Matthew and such makes sense. The christians were basically jews, only they started following Jesus, and evnentually they became their own religion. Alot because of people wanting to be boss, is my guess. Like Paulus/Paul for example.
