Alledgedly,it is about Bonnie Prince Charlie after the Battle of Culloden 1745.When it was obvious the Jacobite army was getting it's butt kicked by the English army Charlie was spirited away from the battlefield and subsequently went on the run with some supporters to the North West Highlands area pursued by the English.He was never caught and eventually was taken to France and never returned to Scotland. So basically the song is in support of Charlie boy.Not all Scottish people see him as a hero though as there were religious aspects to this.Without going into detail and really boring you pal: (1)Jacobites(Scots)were Roman Catholic. (2)English(Hanoverians)were not. This was not the only reason they clashed but it was definitely an underlying factor.
