Let’s see what the scientists say …

Β

There are three pillars to health: proper nutrition, exercise and sleep. Β And while we can usually prioritize the first two, the truth is that sleep is just as important for our physical and mental health.

Β Why can sleeping too much be dangerous to your health?
Β So what happens to your body if you do not sleep well at night?

Β Mood and mental health issues

Β REM sleep - one of the four stages of the sleep cycle - helps regulate mood. Β Thus, sleep deprivation can cause a negative mood, such as irritability and anxiety.

Β Sleep deprivation can also lead to depression - several time-honored studies have shown that insomnia is an independent risk factor for developing depression in young adults. Β The research around this connection is constantly evolving. Β However, it is believed that, as noted above, sleep deprivation can lead to negative thoughts and depressive behavior.

Β Reduced concentration

Β UCLA scientists have found that insomnia leads to communication problems and reduced concentration. Β And according to one study, a staggering 75% of people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have a chronic underlying sleep problem.

Β Increased blood pressure

Β If you sleep less than five hours each night, you are at increased risk for high blood pressure. Β A single night without sleep can lead to higher blood pressure levels the next day. Β Scientists believe this may explain why lack of sleep over time can lead to cardiovascular problems and heart disease.

Β Increased risk of diabetes

Β When you are not sleeping your body does not process the hormone insulin - which regulates blood sugar levels. Β This insulin resistance can then lead to the development of type 2 diabetes over time. Β So if you do not sleep well at night you have a higher risk of developing diabetes.

Β Decreased immune system

Β When the body is weak, it employs drowsiness to promote sleep and recovery from cellular stress. Β In contrast, sleep deprivation weakens the immune system. Β This is one of the reasons why most of us get sick when we are not getting enough rest and sleep deprivation.
