Checked baggage.  If your luggage doesn't make your connecting flight, and you are in transit to a further destination, you might as well kiss the luggage good-bye.

As there are no direct flights to Ukraine (or from European democracies) to Russia, if one wanted to reach Odesa, for example, one could fly to Moldova, and travel by land, 160 km, to Odesa.  If one wanted to travel to Russia, fly to Vilnius, and cross the nearby border into Belarus.

Another route would be to fly to Doha from Barcelona, and then Doha to Moscow.  But unless you have a Tweety boyfriend, that would be expensive.
