FrankZabba
is there any walkers in the house? this is a question i've been meaning to ask for quite some time and today during my walk i decided to see if there were any of you that are into walking. a little bit about my typical walking day. on a good day where i wake up refreshed i can walk a good 11 minute mile. i walk 5 miles at a minimum of 4 days a week. my average mile is a 12 minute mile. some people consider my times to be rather fast and even though they are not fast they are a little bit better than what normal day to day walkers walk. how about any of you, do you walk? TBG 150
I walk quite a bit, but not for the same reasons a lot of people do. I couldn't stand to just sit around getting fat. I gotta move. I do 2.7 miles early in the morning (05:00ET) and the same anytime in the mid afternoon, only the afternoon is a little slower. Timing? I don't really time myself because of all the tree sniffing that goes on. With a Black Lab/Great Dane mix, he's a long legged guy and like to get out and cruise. The morning is more of a trot for me. The afternoon in the heat is a bit slower and we both get water breaks. The dog has his own water bottle that he drinks from and he doesn't leave any on the ground.
FrankZabba
absolutely, sitting around getting fat is not an option in my opinion. i totally understand your situation and need to get out and your dog while getting in some exercise for yourself. if i had a dog, i of course wouldn't be able to time myself for reasons you stated above. the only reason i time myself is to have a benchmark of where i'm at and that allows me to take a walk before i have to do something or go somewhere. i know it takes me about one hour to walk 5 miles, give or take 1 to 2 minutes. for example, if the wife tells me we need to be somewhere at a certain time, i know i have 1.5 hours to take my walk, get a shower and get dressed before we have to leave. mind you, that is only if i haven't already taken my walk in the early hours of the morning and i need to get it in. i try to walk 30 miles a week and a minimum of 20 miles per week. it's like anything else in life, if you slack off too much eventually you will quit doing it. i guess i could get a dog and see how that works out but i like having the time to myself to think during that 5 mile walk in total peace. it has been good for my business with some of the ideas i've come up with while doing it. i'm glad there is at least you that gets out and walks instead of being a couch potato!
TBG 150
My sitting time is to eat and MAYBE spend a total of an hour on the computer forums and email. I'm not going to be the fittest person in the morgue, but I'm not going to be an out of shape person that huffs and puffs just to get up and go to the bathroom.
FrankZabba
i understand completely! i build custom cabinets and shelving for a living, basically a general handyman. i think i'm in pretty good shape, just wish i could quit dipping lol.
TBG 150
Dipping as in that shit that turns your teeth black and rots your gums? If your 50 or older, get ready to invest in an upper and lower plate so you can eat. My wife being a dental hygienist can tell you some gross stories of dippers. TBG 150
I used to smoke 2 packs a day. I'm glad I had the sense to give that up.

Foamy T. Squirrel
I try to walk about 1.5 miles everyday through a nearby local park. Then I pick a certain item I need from either Home Depot, Lowe's or Walmart. Then I try to find a clerk to help me find it. I have the app for all those places, but their system is always down, and their staff of 2.5 people is usually on break. This is great because it adds another 5,000-10,000 steps to my daily quota. A neighbor noticed me walking everyday. He had just got a pacemaker and wanted to know if he could join me, so if one of us went down the other could call for help. I explained how the walking works. 1) you will usually see the same people walking at the same time everyday. I always say "good morning." If they reply, I assume they're not hostile. 2) There will be the dog-walkers. Their dogs are generally friendly and they'll learn to recognize you. 3) There will be the frowsy fraus of fifty years walking in pairs, hoping to lose weight and gossip at the same time. 4) Young people who run cuz they're on the school track team. I envy their ability to run. 5) And finally, there will be men aged 50+ cuz they want to stave off the next heart attack. I told him I often wondered about this last group I see, and told my fried I wondered who their cardiologist might me. Then he says, " Mine's Dr. Singh, how about you?" And oddly, of course, I tell him "Mine is also Dr. Singh." I swear this Doc has the town park wrapped up... I've known people who just sat around all day getting fat and diabetic. Once they started walking everyday, their diabetes disappeared. It's a good hobby to get into, especially if you have a large peaceful park or forest near by.
