Merle's song is an old truckin' song. It had nothing to do with drugs.

You got white line fever by staring at the road for hours on end without a break. Being pushed to your limits until hallucinations set in and all you saw were the single white lines glazing over your eyes as the miles went by. When you finally stopped and snapped out of it, you don't know where you are or how you got there.

Those were the days before the big diesels started to dominate the roads. Where it took you a full day to traverse the Rockies and you had to stop every few downhill miles to cool your brakes. Those were the days before the 500-600 horsepower engines of today that make molehills out of the 15% grades. Now, Jake Brakes, keep the truck from running away down the mountain and disc brakes run cool where the drum brakes just glazed over and you aimed for the runaway ramp.

I knew that.

I also know that some highways have special ramps for the big trucks hauling teenage runaways.  We have a lot of runaways in L.A., mostly in the Hollywood area, but I guess they hitch a ride after the trucks offload them at the runaway ramps.  You can tell that they came from The Ramps by their gravelly voices.

.... sorry .....
