Exactly my point, most politicians have no concept of basic military strategy and I cannot understand where many of them get their advice. No one knows for sure how many troops are on the ground, except maybe the Pentagon and our Chief of Defence group, but it's unlikely to be more than 3,500 to 4,000 combined. What the military experts are suggesting if troops are sent back in, is sufficient numbers to do the job properly. At the height of the Iraqi war, 150,000 wasn't deemed sufficient. Some, like your own GEN Petraeus, believe the Iraqi armed forces can be those ground troops, but the majority still think allied troops are the only solution, especially as they would need to clear out Syria, Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan. I still think, come 2016 we will be going back. That'll bolster your economy and boost our useless Prime Minister's ego, if he's still in power.

All indicators over here suggest a Republican win in the US. Current govt in the UK is Conservative, as is the Liberal govt in Australia, both aligned with the Republican movement. Next US election Nov 2016, in the UK it's May 2015 and Australia no later than Jan 2017. If the Conservatives beat the Liberal Democrats in the UK, the Liberals retain power in Australia and the Republicans win in the US, we will again be fighting on the ground in the middle east.

According to local media, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, has surged to the top of the potential GOP presidential field. This seems to be backed up by foreign media (foreign to Australia). Interesting to note that he has stated if he were to become President, or Commander-in-Chief, he would probably consider putting ground troops into Syria. I’m assuming that he would expect support from so called coalition of the willing, though I’m not sure how many would still be that willing. As much as the general public may not support this move, many senior military leaders that understand tactical war fighting, as against politicians who generally have no idea (and their advisers even less) agree with this strategy. Unlike the Taliban, ISIS is a conventional army, well-funded, well equipped with tanks and heavy armour, using conventional tactics. It’s the type of force that can’t be beaten purely from the air, but can be beaten by conventional ground forces. I have to assume that Gov Walker has some military knowledge, better advisers or got lucky. I don’t know if this fits the Republican platform, but promoting it seems to have improved Gov Walker’s numbers.

Despite all our superior equipment and technology, they have managed to be a formidable enemy. I'm sure the mates of the almost 4,000 allied troops who died in Iraq and the 3,500 who died in Afghanistan will attest to this. And remember, this includes some of the most well trained soldiers in the allied armed forces, as well as a number of CIA operatives. Carpet bombing will achieve very little, as was proven in Vietnam. In fact there are many similarities with the two wars. The French failed in Vietnam and we thought we could do better and didn't. The Russians failed in Afghanistan and we thought we could do better and haven't.

I obviously don't have my weapons on display, but I have gun racks and rifle club stickers clearly visible on my vehicle, as well as my regimental colours, so people know who I am and what I do. If home invaders were thinking of attacking a property in my street, which house do you think they would pick, or rather, which house do you think they will bypass?
