Even though the WHO has not, yet, declared this outbreak a pandemic, (Why won't the WHO officially declare a coronavirus pandemic?), as of 2/26, they did say this. "The global spread of covid-19 seems to have exploded in recent days, with outbreaks revealed in Iran and Italy and a massive increase in cases in South Korea. Tedros Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, has warned that such cases “show that the window of opportunity we have for containing this virus is narrowing”. In fact, it may already have shut. On 21 February, epidemiologists warned that we are failing to detect two-thirds of infected people travelling globally, “potentially resulting in multiple chains of as-yet undetected human-to-human transmission outside mainland China”. Some of those chains have now been detected, and, ominously, many cases can’t be traced to their source."

This may help put it in perspective. COVID-19 Coronavirus Outbreak Also, the SARS outbreak in 2002-2003 had about 8100 cases with almost 800 deaths. That's nearly a 10% mortality rate. But, in 2012, in Saudi Arabia, there was an outbreak of the MERS coronavirus. It caused "only" about 2500 cases, but over 34% of them died.
