It's basically a LOT of thumb drives, aka memory sticks or flash drives, all "wired" together inside a small metal case. SSDs and thumb drives both use what's called flash memory. The main differences between SSDs and normal hard drives is, SSDs have no moving parts. Normal hard drives have spinning platters and moving heads that read and write data. The other main difference is speed. I have one in my laptop and I can restart/reboot it in 30 seconds flat. I also have a regular hard drive, but the Windows OS and all my software are installed on my SSD, so everything runs much faster. If you ever decide to buy a Windows PC, laptop or desktop, I highly recommend getting it with an SSD or installing one yourself, if it doesn't come with one. Makes a world of difference.

But seriously I do agree with you about SSD's they are the best upgrade you can do for a performance boost and they are now relatively cheap to what they were. I see 250GB ones are now around the £50 mark now. Put one in one old laptop about a year ago and it literally transformed it.

No moving parts and way too fast??

Can Windows ever be too fast? And with no moving parts there are fewer things that can break or go wrong. Aside from adding more RAM, they're one of the best upgrades you can make to a computer, IMHO. 😊
