Kitten Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 since most of the apartments speak different languages and a few have dogs and they seem to listen to their owners ( sometimes) that raised a question to me, do you think dogs understand different languages?
Panther063 Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 I think they understand commands in their owners language, but that they aren't multilingual. I've heard of Trainers using German to train guard dogs, so they wouldn't listen to English speaking people.
mnbvcxz Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 My wife must listen to a different language. She dosen't hear me either.
itsme Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 since most of the apartments speak different languages and a few have dogs and they seem to listen to their owners ( sometimes) that raised a question to me, do you think dogs understand different languages? Funny you should ask, I just saw a thread about this today on reddit: Answers: "yes, this is notable in social creatures, like whales. whales transported from different oceans essentially would have to learn different calls and sounds used for meanings that they already associate with" "Crows have also been found to have regional dialects" Link: http://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/1vfl6o/eli5do_animals_from_different_countries_have/
woodworker Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 I think that they understand their owners, but that a dogs bark is much the same everywhere. They're pretty good animals though. Very loyal and loving.
Kitten Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 Its just always seemed strange that they can do commands in different languages so that question came to me when nora was telling her dogs to get down and stuff
Guest Squirrel Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Dogs probably learn to understand human the verbal commands, but I believe they do so by first observing the body language of their human masters. Most body language of humans is, well, pretty much universal.
TBG 150 Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 It's sound association. Certain sounds are equivalent to certain actions. That's why single word commands while training used in the same basic tone of voice works best.
