It often is also dependent upon getting grant funding, frightening the hell out of other people, or is used as a political tool. If they are not sensational, they won't get any press. If the models do not perform in accordance with factual events, they are useless. If the models attempt to explain future causality and events that cannot be supported by the model, then they are useless. If I hit you squarely in the face with a 10 lb (4.53 Kg) cannon ball that has a velocity of 200 mph (321.8688 km/s) at room temperature and at any altitude, I can predict that you will immediately fall over. If you don't, I will not suggest that you will fall over next year, or even ten years, or twelve years, just because my prediction would be, well, really wrong. (Your falling over would not be the result of a man-made cannon ball, but rather the inertia you failed to exert against it. It could just be a naturally made rock.) But if you do get hit by a cannon ball, it will not be fired by ManBearPig. We squirrels are smarter than you think.
