What you heard is close

English pronunciation is much different from what is actually written in Slavic languages

I might be wrong but that's what I think it is unless Snaky or Again will correct me.

Russian: Алина English: Alina

English pronunciation: ah-LEE-nah

she me might be calling her by short version: ah-LEE-n/Alin

I wasn't present to hear any name calling, but kooloos could be right. She could have been using the short for Alina--Alin, or she could have been saying "Hey Lin", which would be a shortened "Hey Lina"(forgot that one didn't you?)). In Russian H is not pronounced in "hey". Or there's another name it could be--Elina. Again, the friendly calling version would be Elin.

And actually Julia-Yuliya is an exception to the "a rule". As well as Maya. They are written with an a in English, but they end in a different letter in Russian.
