I asked Google AI about Russian etiquette for introducing a guest to a friend's mother. When your friend walks in, lead the introduction properly: Turn to the mother first and address her respectfully by her first name and patronymic (e.g., "[Mother's First Name] [Mother's Patronymic], pozvol'te predstavit' moyu podrugu, [Friend's Name]"). Then introduce your friend (e.g., "[Friend's Name], eto [Mother's Name] [Mother's Patronymic]"). Use the formal "Вы" (Vy) when addressing the mother to show the appropriate respect for elders .Between the arriving guest and the mother: Handshakes are generally reserved for men. The arriving female guest should absolutely not initiate a handshake. Instead, she should smile, make direct eye contact, and offer a standard verbal greeting like Zdravstvuyte (Здравствуйте) or a polite, respectful phrase. The mother may extend her hand if she wishes, but otherwise, no physical contact is expected. Crucial Russian Superstition: Advise your friend to avoid any greetings—handshakes, hugs, or cheek kisses—while standing in the doorway. According to Russian tradition, greeting across a threshold is considered bad luck and is believed to lead to an argument 1 1 Quote

IMO, if this is a first-time introduction of someone's mother, at a minimum, there is a shaking of hands. Adeline makes zero effort to do so, so bad manners on her part, -- if the guest was introduced as Nancy's mother. Both to blame for the lack of introduction ...Adeline just walks in and nods whilst Nancy's mum just swivels around on the sofa and acknowledges Adeline rather than get up and greet her. Adeline essentially was the visitor whilst Nancy's mum is a temporary resident so she is the one who should have got up to greet Adeline ...but as I said ...both to blame for lack of introduction. After I made my post about Adeline being too informal, I did a Google AI search for proper Russian etiquette for such situations. I edited my post with the reply from Google AI. So I will not be so harsh on Adeline, although I still think she was far too casual when it came to the introductions, as if Nancy's mom (assuming it is Nancy's mom) was a client sitting next to her at a hair salon. This is my point though ...if you went to a restaurant with a friend and your friend's friend arrived later then you both stand up to greet the person arriving as you are already there ...you don't just sit there and say 'hi' and shake hands over the table ...well surely not anyway although as you rightly said you researched etiquette of Russians. I await the translations by a fluent Russian speaker, leaving out the guest's first name. As long as the mother is present chances are there's not going to be much action except for massages. 1 Quote

Unless my eyes deceived me, the guest has removed the rings that were on the ring finger of both hands when she arrived. Assuming the guest arrived from Russia, that is not an easy trip these days. AFAIK, the only border crossing which is still easy is the crossing at Narva,Estonia -- Ivangorod, Russia. The Narva-Ivangorod crossing is open only to pedestrians, with vehicles barred until further notice. The crossing operates daily from 0700 to 1900, and all travelers undergo full customs and profiling checks. The crossing is made by using a bridge across the river that separates the two countries. There are other crossings between Poland and Belarus that are still open, but the screening can be more intense. Also, the guest carefully packed perhaps half her suitcase with food items. I assume these are foods not typically available in Montenegro. Montenegro is one of the “ easiest “ European countries for Russians , no visas , currently the most friendly European country ( Serbia also ) for Russians and that’s why they are thousands now living there. It just needs a flight to Constantinople and then a connection flight to Podgorica . Montenegro will play a major role politically in the future for the balcan peninsula , but it is just politics in the bigger picture and just a “ safe “ escape for many Russian people from the stupidity happening with the ongoing Ukraine - Russia war . I agree. Nancy did sneak a vibe session in the bathtub before her shower. She panicked when mom knocked on the door. Nancy had the music loud to hide the sound of the vibe. 1 Quote
