I am not American but this is one of the most evocative pieces music ever written. It make me think of a few things obviously NYC (I think I stayed at the Gershwin Hotel which was incredibly primitive and bohemian) possibly because of Woody Allen's "Manhattan" but I think it really feels like early in the morning after I've not been asleep and how I would try and ease into the day. Also I have always associated with "Pinocchio" when he goes to that island and gets corrupted - that kind of sleazy atmosphere where once more everybody else is yet to get up and you're playing pool. Actually I have experienced that reality a few times and then when it's light enough head out to play golf for free before any course officials are there to kick you off for not being a member.
