Physically fighting back against this POS would probably land her in the hospital. There is so much more going on in these type of relationships than just physical abuse. There is the mental abuse and brainwashing that manipulators like Alex do to the victim. They come to believe theyr'e the problem , and they've done something wrong to deserve the abuse they take.
