If I were to be pursuing a public office in which the populace voted that particular leader in, when it came to being questioned on my stance on abortion, I would simply say, "That has nothing to do with how I govern my elected office". Looking at it any other way is pure pandering to one side or the other. There is no middle ground on this issue.
