But surely this is not confined to Europe? Isn't this common in major cities in the USA as well? Especially where there are universities and students needing accommodation? Wasn't the long-running American sit-com, Friends, based on young people in the US sharing an apartment together? I've shared houses and apartments in various countries and cities, after leaving home in my teens and making my way in the world and nobody batted an eyelid. Those adjoining villas in Barcelona are luxury houses, rather than cramped apartments, it should also be mentioned.

They had ONE job! YOU should go and work for them as you can do far more with hands tied behind your back and always do that, without monetary reward!

It seems highly likely that Masha is the on-site second-in-charge (2IC) so that when Nelly and Bogdan go off somewhere at crucial times Masha is sent off to keep a close eye on things for the RLC people. It's doubtful if Leora has much say in anything, other than having secure employment and no doubt a very steady, if not highly remunerative, contract with the RLC company.

At the very least, this is Real Life as we all know it! And we can share their pain!
