Yes, the russian church actually still goes by the julian calendar, while the russian state switched to the gregorian calendar in early 1900, so they celbrate christmass in early january. Newyear comes before christmass.

Also, newyear is celebrated just as much, or even more than christmass. It stems from the atheistic communist aera.

Most of Europe and other countries in Eastern Europe celebrate Christmas and the exchange of gifts on January 6th (3 King's Day ) . Supposedly , it coincides to the day that the 3 kings arrived from the East to bring gifts to the newly born Christ !  Spain also celebrates in this manner .
