I'm talking about elk being the orginal word for moose. Actually, it was the Britons who started to fuck it up. Older English elk, German elch, Scandinavian elg, Latin alces, all refered to this animal you Americans call moose today. But elk (moose) got extinct on Great Britain, so the Englishmen started using the word elk about big deers instead. When they came to America, where elk (moose) actually excisted, they continued to use the word elk about an American spieces of deer. Meanwhile you picked up the indian word moose for what was originally elk. 

You also picked up the word caribou from Indian languages. In Europe it was called reindeer.
