Excuse me for being verbose (talk too much), but I started a thread in Old Dude's about our language problems on the board. I suggest we move over there for such discussions. Trying to control threads with CamCaps members is worse than herding cats. Or squirrels... ;D (PS: I wouldn't be found in the company with Marta, David, or any of their friends. I am a very tolerant little squirrel. But I'm a citizen of the US. I can say whatever I want to say in American-English about my government, and I can say it with impunity. Chinese citizens, North Korean citizens --German citizens -- even British subjects and Canadians, cannot. I can also worship as I choose if my religion does not interfere with the rights of my fellow individuals, defend myself if attacked, and bring down the government if it should become a tyranny. The Government cannot interfere. The US Government does not give me these simple rights. Neither does the U.S. Constitution --it merely acknowledges that such basic human rights exist a priori. This is what we call "American Exceptionalism." If it's got given by government, it cannot be legitimately taken away. (This was a smart move by the Founders.) Most people who speak versions of Chinese or Russian would not understand this concept: but they all seem to want to live here. I would have wished three things in my life: To dance (women love men who can dance), to have bought Google stock at $1-a-share in a private placement transaction, and to have the skills to be a polyglot.
