Pulo, It appears to me that she want to do something to help her plant. That is admirable. However there is such a thing as dormant seasons and "fall" when you trim, embellish soil etc. You plain flat don't bare root trees now. It might survive but it surely isn't optimal. Her intentions are neat but her horticulture is ignorant. Hope the tree makes her messing with it. It would also help to give it direct sunlight on the patio sans the glass and apartment air.
