Secretary Michael R. Pompeo With Tony Perkins of Washington Watch Interview Michael R. Pompeo, Secretary of State March 24, 2020 QUESTION: I know you just got back in from off the road traveling. I appreciate you joining us this afternoon. But I’m going to ask you a very plain, straightforward question: Where did this virus come from that over 50,000 Americans have contracted, in the last count, about 700 had died from? SECRETARY POMPEO: Yeah, Tony, this virus began in Wuhan, China. There’s no doubt about where it began. Indeed, the Chinese Communist Party itself acknowledged that that’s where the virus began. And unfortunately, the Chinese Communist Party covered this up and delayed its response in a way that has truly put thousands of lives at risk. QUESTION: Yeah, the timeline on this quite clear that they sat on this for over a month, and even then continued to deny that there was human-to-human transmittal of this disease, saying it all came from animals. And in the meantime, this thing began to spread literally around the globe. SECRETARY POMPEO: Well, Tony, your viewers or listeners who are paying attention know full well every day, every week matters in terms of how this information is transmitted around the world. That is, when you share this information, the best scientists around the world can begin to work on it. You can start all the processes, not only vaccines and things that mitigate, but you can begin to put in place the things that will cause the spread to be decreased. And it’s multiplicative, and so every day that the Chinese Communist Party sat on this information and didn’t do the right thing, and instead punished doctors who were attempting to alert the world about what was taking place there in Wuhan, increased the number of people who would be exposed, and thereby put all of us all around the world – and the Chinese people as well – put them at unnecessary risk, too. QUESTION: Well – and you may not want to go here, but I certainly want to make this statement, because the World Health Organization really played cover-up for China, basically going along with the Chinese line, and that was troubling to me. This is an organization that’s supposed to be looking out for the global health, but yet they were buying the line that China was feeding, the cover-up and misinformation. SECRETARY POMPEO: When we go back and look at this, we will, I think, all find out who was transparent, who was straightforward in the course of this moving forward. We can see – and you referred to this earlier – the cover-up effort continues; the disinformation campaign from Russia and Iran as well as China continues. They’re talking about it coming from the U.S. Army and they’re saying maybe it began in Italy, all things to deflect responsibility. And while the time will come for recriminations, we’ve got to work our way forward. But the world needs to understand what’s really going on, because it’s still important. It’s still important to have transparency even today. This is an ongoing global crisis, and we need to make sure that every country today is being transparent sharing what’s really going on, so that the global community, the global health care, infectious disease community can begin to work on this in a holistic way. My concern is that this cover-up, this disinformation that the Chinese Communist Party is engaged in, is still denying the world the information it needs so that we can prevent further cases or something like this from recurring again. Secretary Michael R. Pompeo With Hugh Hewitt of The Hugh Hewitt Show Interview Michael R. Pompeo, Secretary of State March 26, 2020 QUESTION: Neither can I. Let me move to China. Can you confirm the report that the G7 disagrees with you over your belief we ought to call this the Wuhan virus? SECRETARY POMPEO: So different countries take different approaches. I will say this: I was actually pleased yesterday. The EU countries that are part of the G7 made very clear, as did my Japanese counterpart, that the Chinese disinformation campaign that the Chinese are actively engaged in even as we speak, trying to defer blame, trying to claim that they are the solution to this and in fact they weren’t the nation that, at the very beginning of this, had the – one country that had the opportunity and the data set that could have put this virus in a much better place than we are today and failed to do so. The G7 countries yesterday were unanimous in saying we understand that this is a risk, that this is a problem both to the EU and to the United States and the world, and they agreed to jointly work alongside us to push back against this disinformation campaign. QUESTION: But on a name they cannot agree? SECRETARY POMPEO: Everybody’s got a different theory. My theory is we should always be accurate with respect to how we identify something. This virus began in Wuhan; I’ve referred to it as the Wuhan virus. It is important that the world understands how this began because we need transparency to save lives, Hugh. It’s that simple. We need facts and data. China has a special responsibility to be transparent because the outbreak started in China, in Wuhan, and the Chinese Government was the first to know about it. QUESTION: Does General Secretary Xi owe the world an apology and an explanation? SECRETARY POMPEO: I’ll leave that to him. What I can tell you are the facts. You’ll recall, Hugh, that at the very onset of this, when America first learned about this, we did our best to make sure that we had transparency and information. We offered to send our expert medical providers in. We offered to make sure that we could provide whatever support they needed. And instead of cracking down on the virus in a timely fashion, they cracked down on information flow. They kicked journalists out. They punished those who were speaking about this inside of their own country. When you have challenges, when you have crises like this one, the most important thing at the onset is to make sure that the world gets access to the data that they need to prevent this, to prevent the spread of this, and the Chinese Government did not act in a way that’s consistent with that global need, that global demand. QUESTION: I wish to play for your Dr. Fauci on CNN last night, a quick clip, cut number 23: “Italy got hit very badly because they had a large number of importations from China by Chinese tourists.” Do you agree with that, Secretary Pompeo? SECRETARY POMPEO: I do. That’s factually accurate. I think if I heard the clip right, that was Italy he was referring to. That’s also the case in Iran that there were many flights between China and Iran, and we think that there are, in fact, many nations that had their outbreak begin with transit from China. And it’s important to know, too, it was the case at the onset of this there were countries that wanted to close their doors to Chinese travel, to the Chinese, and the Chinese Government pushed back against them, asking them to keep their airports open in an effort to protect China from the stigma that might be attached with having transportation closed down. -

China Is Avoiding Blame by Trolling the World Beijing is successfully dodging culpability for its role in spreading the coronavirus. The evidence of China’s deliberate cover-up of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan is a matter of public record. In suppressing information about the virus, doing little to contain it, and allowing it to spread unchecked in the crucial early days and weeks, the regime imperiled not only its own country and its own citizens but also the more than 100 nations now facing their own potentially devastating outbreaks. More perniciously, the Chinese government censored and detained those brave doctors and whistleblowers who attempted to sound the alarm and warn their fellow citizens when they understood the gravity of what was to come. Yet in de-emphasizing where the epidemic began (something China has been aggressively pushing for), we run the risk of obscuring Beijing’s role in letting the disease spread beyond its borders. China has a history of mishandling outbreaks, including SARS in 2002 and 2003. But Chinese leaders’ negligence in December and January—for well over a month after the first outbreak in Wuhan—far surpasses those bungled responses. The end of last year was the time for authorities to act, act decisively they did—not against the virus, but against whistle-blowers who were trying to call attention to the public health threat. This is what allowed the virus to spread across the globe. Because the Chinese Communist Party was pretending that there was little to be concerned about, Wuhan was a porous purveyor of the virus. The government only instituted a lockdown in Wuhan on January 23—seven weeks after the virus first appeared. As events in Italy, the United States, Spain, and France have shown, quite a lot can happen in a week, much less seven. By then, mayor Zhou Xianwang admitted that more than 5 million people had already left Wuhan. In a 2019 article, Chinese experts warned it was “highly likely that future SARS- or MERS-like coronavirus outbreaks will originate from bats, and there is an increased probability that this will occur in China.” In a 2007 journal article, infectious-disease specialists published a study arguing that “the presence of a large reservoir of SARS-CoV-like viruses in horseshoe bats, together with the culture of eating exotic mammals in southern China, is a time bomb. The possibility of the reemergence of SARS and other novel viruses from animals or laboratories and therefore the need for preparedness should not be ignored.” It was ignored. But is this a time for blame? Yes, it is. Accounting for responsibility when a disaster happens—particularly one likely to devastate entire countries, leaving thousands dead—is not beside the point, particularly as Chinese officials move to take advantage of the crisis and launch a disinformation campaign claiming that the U.S. Army introduced the virus. Well before the new coronavirus spread across American cities, the Chinese regime was already rather creatively trolling U.S. publications, expelling American journalists, and “weaponizing wokeness” over anything it perceived as critical of China’s role in mishandling the epidemic. To hear Chinese spokespeople use the language of racism and prejudice is somewhat surreal, considering this is a regime that has put more than 1 million Muslims and ethnic minorities in “reeducation” camps. -

Well then I will stand corrected, but the Chinese and Russian numbers are skewed and we all know that. They do not report to the WHO the true accurate numbers. Lets just do the EU and USA shall we The EU =332,436 to date cases of Infection...Deaths = 20,589 to date currently=6.19% The US =123,311 to date cases of infection...Deaths = 2,211 to date currently=1.79% Both health care systems have failed the people of both the EU and USA, but it appears to be much more significant in the Universal healthcare systems of the EU than it is in the US health care capitolistic health care system. What is very encouraging is the recovery rate of the critical patients requiring healthcare intervention. 21.35% currently to date worldwide. That should give everyone hope the very best medical professionals and very best of research and development scientist are working very hard to help all of the people of the world. 4,422,773 km2. EU... 513 million population. Infections per capita = .064% 9,826,630 km2. USA..... 327 million population. Infections per capita = .037% Because the EU is so densely populated compared to the USA a person stands twice the chance to be infected currently to date. -

Here is the US the infection rate is pretty even in all of age groups above 18 years of age, but the death rate of course is most prevalent in those who are age 60 or older with immune systems that are challenged to defeat the virus. -

I agree that it is not reached its peak here. The Italian outbreak has been traced to a 38-year-old man who sought treatment at a hospital in Codogno, near Milan, on Feb. 18, where he infected dozens of patients and medical staff. An ongoing worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a new infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 , was first confirmed to have spread to the United States in January 2020. Cases have been confirmed in all fifty U.S. states, the District of Columbia How did the coronavirus start? The outbreak began in Wuhan, China - a city with a population of over 11 million. The virus is believed to have originated from a "wet market" where animals such as bats, snakes, rabbit and birds are illegally sold. Humans as well as animals - both living and dead - are put together in close contact in wet markets in often unhygienic conditions. As the coronavirus is known to be transferred from animals to humans, it is believed market stallholders, who came into contact with animals were the first people infected with the strain. A 61-year-old frequent shopper at the wet market was the first person to die from the virus. Shortly after the spread of the disease, officials in China imposed a nationwide ban on the buying and selling of wild animals in markets, restaurants and other retail places. Although experts are yet to identify the animal source of the virus, bats are widely believed to be the original hosts. -

I am a registered independent. Using your analogy currently one city in the US represents 44% of the overall death rate and one state represents 34% of all infections in the US to date. That same city only represents 2.61% of the population of the US. Once again you must quit believing all the MEDIA BS as it is mostly fictional and their opinions, and not proven scientifically or numerically. -

I just have one question, How is it the Italian, Spanish, German, UK and France, Iran, and even though the lying Chinese and Russian reports, as they haven't changed for over month now. All have Universal healthcare for all. These countries all have the highest actual death per capita. How well is it working for their better than US healthcare systems ? US 327 million people 1711 deaths 104671 cases, death rate = 1.6% percent infection .032% infection per captia EU 513 million people 19375 deaths 213862 cases, death rate = 9.0% percent infection .041% infection per capita. In terms of landmass, the United States and Europe are similar in size —the United States is 9,833,000 square kilometers while Europe is 10,180,000 square kilometers I may have missed a few of the countries belonging to EU, but the numbers don't lie, the above statements simply can not be proven numerically, which makes it typical post of opinions that has been educated by the Media, instead of Science and Math. Just one of my opinions of the many failures of the universal healthcare systems. BTW, Alandino what about the EU Rapid Response team and Epidemic Response teams, how well did they do ? -

This is from a friend of from High School: The reports are that the truckers are getting supplies to the stores. People are stocking the shelves all night and letting old people shop first. Carnival Cruise line told Trump “We can match those big Navy Hospital ships with some fully staffed cruise ships” GM said hold our cars and watch this; we can make those ventilators where we were making cars starting next week. Women and children are making homemade masks and handing out snacks to truckers. Restaurants and schools said, We’ve got kitchens and staff; we can feed kids.” Churches are holding on-line services and taking care of their members and community. NBA basketball players said, “Hold our basketballs while we write checks to pay the arena staff.” Construction companies said, “Here are some masks for the medical staff and doctors”. Breweries are making sanitizer out of the left-over ingredients. We thought we couldn’t live without Baseball, NASCAR, NBA or going to the beach, restaurants or a bar. Instead, we’re trying to keep those businesses open by ordering take-out. You’ve got two Democrat Governors getting told “We will make it happen” by a Republican President who has fought with them for three and half years. While the media keeps repeating itself, “We are a nation divided.” What communist China didn't count on was America saying "Hey, hold my beer and watch this." I think a Japanese Admiral in the middle of the Pacific said it best in 1941, "I think we have awakened a sleeping giant." Give us a few more weeks (maybe months) and we will be doing much better! And stop listening to the hysterical media!! -

Scientists say the coronavirus is not mutating quickly and might respond to a single vaccine Scientists studying the novel coronavirus' genetic code say it does not appear to be mutating quickly, suggesting any vaccine developed for it will likely remain effective in the long term. Peter Thielen, a molecular geneticist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, told The Washington Post that the strains of the virus infecting people in the U.S. have only about four to 10 genetic variations between the strain that emerged in Wuhan, China. "That's a relatively small number of mutations for having passed through a large number of people," he told the newspaper. "At this point the mutation rate of the virus would suggest that the vaccine developed for SARS-CoV-2 would be a single vaccine, rather than a new vaccine every year like the flu vaccine." -
