I download a bunch of movies on BitTorrent using a paid VPN and my ISP still sent me an e-Mail for the DMCA Removal Order they received of all the Movies I had downloaded.  Even if a VPN masks the IP Address it does not seem to mask the DNS#'s of the ISP.

your ISP has connection logs, so they can pass it to police or a court and then they can go to VPN provider and get your details from them.
