Two things I've intercepted in observation.
Nina does not want to risk becoming pregnant. Once Alan jumped in, she jumped up from the bed to wash herself at once. Complained horrors.

I think she does not or can not take contraceptives

And Alan was not very comfortable with condoms at first. Still it is not, but thanks to the use. Then getting used to it. My guess so much the face he does when he puts it on is that his skin is very sensitive.
