Load balancing first reared its head during live streaming of Victoria;s Secret 'fashion shows several decades ago. From the NY Time inn 1999 "IF a fashion show is Webcast on the Internet and most people who try to see it cannot, does it still make a splash? You bet. "New-media case study: the flaunting of Victoria's Secret spring collection, held live in Manhattan Wednesday evening and simulcast on line for the masses. The lingerie company, a unit of Intimate Brands Inc., spent $1.5 million on one 30-second television spot during the Super Bowl broadcast and $4 million afterwards to advertise the fashion show in newspapers internationally,". Some news reports focused not on the event's success but on the fact that some of the millions of would-be viewers were closed out of the World Wide Web site during the live show. There was also much ado that many who did manage to establish contact received audio and video that sputtered under the Web-surfing deluge.
