The 15,000 patients who were treated with the drug had a 34% increase in risk of mortality and a 137% increased risk of serious heart arrhythmia, these risks were even high for those who were also treated with an antibiotic. This study only confirms previous understanding that hydroxychloroquine has no benefit in treating COVID-19 patients and may increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular events.21 The WHO is halting the hydroxychloroquine portion of its Solidarity Trial, which aims to find new treatments for COVID-19 patients, following the new Lancet study.22"

It's proven as a treatment for malaria, but not for an illness with completely different symptoms. If you cross-prescribe drugs for diseases they're not designed for, you could run into major side effect problems and cause more harm than good.
